Cuba: The Defence of Freedom of Religion or Belief Under Fire

October 16 at 9:00 am - 10:30 am EDT

A panel of experts from in and outside of Cuba will discuss recent developments in relation to freedom of religion or belief (FoRB). This will include how the Cuban government is attempting to frame domestic and international advocacy on FoRB as an ‘act of aggression against the island’. The panel will also look at how Cuban state security agents are carrying out disinformation campaigns through traditional media outlets and social media, targeting individual faith leaders, specific religious groups and even faith-based umbrella organizations like the Cuban Evangelical Alliance, in an attempt to weaken their international support and to foment division on the island within the human rights sector. The discussion will also examine positive developments in terms of independent civil society’s response to these attacks and other FoRB violations.
